Shanna Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Shanna A. Smith, CTE, CTA serves as Associate Director of Research at the Military Family Advisory Network (MFAN), where she leads a mixed-methods research portfolio grounded in lived-experience insights During her time with MFAN, she has also shared her expertise on both the public affairs and programs teams.

Her work centers on applied research, translating findings into actionable strategies for diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, policymakers, corporations, and nonprofit organizations. She oversees key initiatives such as the Military Family 360 study (formerly the Military Family Support Programming Survey) and other topical research efforts. During her tenure with MFAN, she has also contributed her expertise on both the public affairs and programs teams.

With more than 18 years of award-winning, multi-industry experience, Dr. Smith has held roles spanning executive leadership, marketing and communications, partner and community relations, and hospitality and event management across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. She also serves as a professor and consultant, teaching courses in research, marketing, organizational development, business leadership and management, and hospitality.

She holds a doctoral degree from Walden University, with a specialization in strategic planning and human resources, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Liberty University and a Bachelor of Arts in communication from Hardin-Simmons University. She is also a graduate of the prestigious Harvard Business School’s Young American Leaders Program and holds additional leadership certifications through Dale Carnegie and the Experience Institute.

A dedicated servant leader, Dr. Smith is deeply committed to mentorship and community service impact. She recently served as a Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) leader for the 25th Infantry Division, where she was awarded the Public Service Commendation Medal. She currently serves as a trustee for Hardin-Simmons University, and contributes to several organizations, including the Fulbright Virtual Chapter Board, the Texas Governor’s Committee to Support the Military, the Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Professional Network, and Leadership San Antonio as a Steering Committee Mentor.

For Dr. Smith, supporting military families is personal and lends firsthand credibility to her work: she is a military child, sister, spouse, and an officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
