job summary
The Director of Data & Analytics will lead the development, implementation, and management of MFAN’s data infrastructure and analytics strategy. This role is responsible for building and maintaining systems that support data collection, storage, analysis, and visualization across the organization. The Director will ensure MFAN’s data ecosystem is reliable, secure, and aligned with organizational goals, enabling staff and leadership to make informed decisions based on high-quality data. This includes overseeing data modernization initiatives, developing and maintaining dashboards and reporting tools, and establishing best practices for data governance and management. Working collaboratively across teams, the Director of Data & Analytics will translate complex data into actionable insights that supports MFAN’s research, programs, partnerships, and strategic initiatives impacting military families.

- Full-Time, Exempt Position
- Hours: Standard hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET on Monday–Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET on Fridays, unless otherwise approved by the department lead. The candidate will be expected to work during these hours and schedule will be finalized upon hire. There will be occasions when extended hours are required due to events, travel, meetings, or other requirements.
- Location: Remote. As this is a fully remote position, candidates are expected to have a dedicated workspace and access to high-speed internet. This position is limited to a candidate living in the 48 contiguous states.
- Travel: Occasional travel may be required for staff retreats, conferences, partner meetings, or organizational events (approximately 2–4 times per year).
duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and implement MFAN’s organizational data and analytics strategy, aligning data systems, tools, and reporting capabilities with the organization’s strategic priorities
- Design, build, and maintain MFAN’s data architecture and infrastructure, including databases, data pipelines, system integrations, and analytics platforms.
- Lead the modernization of MFAN’s data ecosystem, establishing authoritative sources of truth for key organizational datasets and improving accessibility, efficiency, and reliability of organizational data.
- Develop and maintain dashboards, reporting tools, and data visualizations that support organizational decision-making, program evaluation, and strategic planning, and design externally facing data products (including subscription-based dashboards hosted on MFAN’s website) for partners and paying users.
- Design, implement, and maintain internal AI-enabled tools and large language model (LLM) applications that leverage MFAN’s data and knowledge assets to support research insights, operational efficiency, and informed decision-making.
- Champion a culture of data-informed decision-making across the organization by building trust in data systems, mentoring staff in data use, and helping teams develop the confidence and capability to incorporate data into their work.
- Establish and maintain data governance, privacy, and compliance standards, including policies and processes governing the collection, storage, processing, quality, documentation, and access of organizational data.
- Implement processes for monitoring and improving data quality across systems to ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability in organizational reporting.
- Partner with internal teams to identify data needs and develop analytics solutions that support research, programs, partnerships, and operational decision-making.
- Translate complex data into accessible insights and recommendations for leadership, staff, and external stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain documentation for data systems, processes, and reporting standards to ensure sustainability, transparency, and organizational continuity.
- Manage staff, vendors, consultants, and technology partners related to data infrastructure, analytics, and AI development, and monitor emerging trends in data and nonprofit analytics to continuously strengthen MFAN’s data capabilities.
REQUIRED Experience & Skills
- Bachelors’ degree with relative experience, or Master’s degree in STEM, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in data analytics, data infrastructure, data management, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience designing and managing data systems, databases, data pipelines, and analytics infrastructure.
- Experience developing dashboards and data visualizations using tools such as Power BI, Qlik, Looker, or similar platforms, including dashboards designed for internal stakeholders and external audiences.
- Strong experience with data analysis tools such as Qualtrics, Stata, R, or other analytics tools.
- Experience managing data pipelines and integrating multiple data sources, including preparing datasets for advanced analytics or AI-enabled applications.
- Knowledge of data governance, data quality management, and data security best practices.
- Ability to translate complex data into clear insights and recommendations for non-technical audiences.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence, mentor, and collaborate with colleagues across technical and non-technical roles.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with experience working cross-functionally with diverse teams.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while managing organizational priorities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading data modernization or digital transformation initiatives.
- Familiarity with survey data, research datasets, or program evaluation frameworks.
- Experience integrating CRM, survey platforms, or program systems into analytics workflows.
- Knowledge of cloud-based data infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- Experience developing or deploying AI-enabled analytics tools, including applications using large language models (LLMs), knowledge retrieval systems, or other machine learning techniques.
- Experience developing external-facing dashboards, data products, or web-integrated analytics platforms.
- Experience establishing organizational metrics frameworks or defining key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Experience managing external consultants or technical vendors.
- Interest in or familiarity with issues impacting military families and military communities.
